Royal College of Music deeply saddened by the death of Her Majesty The Queen

The Royal College of Music (RCM) today sends condolences to the Royal Family following the death of Her Majesty The Queen, announced yesterday evening (September 8).

Professor Colin Lawson, Director of the RCM said: 'It is with profound sadness that we learn of the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II who served as President of the Royal College of Music from 1943 – 1952 and then Patron from 1952 for the entirety of her 70-year reign. On behalf of the students and staff of the Royal College of Music, I send our deepest condolences to the Royal Family, especially our President, His Majesty King Charles III, who will lead the country in mourning.'

Her Majesty The Queen was a proud champion of classical music throughout her life and showed unwavering dedication to the Royal College of Music throughout her reign. She attended events at the RCM before and during her reign. Notable visits include when, in November 1947, the then Princess Elizabeth attended a concert at the RCM and distributed prizes at the College. As Patron she attended the RCM on several occasions including in December 1973 when she presented The Queen Mother with an honorary Doctor of Music degree and in 1986 when she officially opened the Royal College of Music’s Britten Theatre.
