RCM to fund scholarships for Black, Asian and Ethnically Diverse students

The Royal College of Music will fund three UK students from ethnic minority backgrounds who wish to study as an undergraduate from 2018/19.

UK Black, Asian and Ethnically Diverse musicians are currently under-represented across the performing arts and these scholarships demonstrate the RCM's continued commitment to diversity. The scholarships will be awarded on merit and enable talented students to study at the UK's leading institution for music education with financial security. The scholarships will be up to the value of full fees (currently £9,250 a year) and can be used either to cover tuition fees or to help with living costs.

RCM Director Professor Colin Lawson said: 'We know that students from under-represented groups sometimes find finances to be the biggest barrier to entry when making decisions about higher education. We believe it is imperative to provide access to excellence for all talented students, regardless of means, and I am delighted that we are able to offer three scholarships covering up to full fees.'

RCM Deputy Director Kevin Porter commented: 'The RCM is a diverse and welcoming community representing some 60 different nationalitites. We are proud of the RCM's diversity and these scholarships for Black, Asian and Ethnically Diverse students continue our commitment and are central to the RCM's ongoing strategy.'

All UK Black, Asian and Ethnically Diverse applicants will be invited to put themselves forward for consideration for these scholarships after applying for the RCM's Bachelor of Music (BMus) programme.
