Royal College of Music enters new phase of collaboration with Abbey Road Institute

Royal College of Music’s collaboration with Abbey Road Institute gives students enhanced professional recording studio experience.
Global leader in performing arts, Royal College of Music, announces the next phase of their collaboration with Abbey Road Institute London, which includes a number of recording projects for Composition for Screen students and large-scale orchestral projects to take place at the iconic studios.
The relationship between the Royal College of Music and Abbey Road Institute brings together the specialist skills and expertise from both institutions, with RCM musicians invited to recording sessions with access to top-tier, industry-leading equipment, and ARI trainee music producers able to work with talented RCM musicians from all genres.

Stephen Johns, RCM Artistic Director, says: ‘We are delighted to be working ever closer with Abbey Road Institute. The collaboration between our two great institutions brings together the creative skills of our composers and performers with the technical expertise of the student engineers at ARI, enhancing our mutual learning and teaching, and creating the music of the future.’
Dr Dimitri Scarlato, RCM Area Leader, Composition for Screen, comments: ‘I’m delighted that our composition for screen students are able to bring their creative work alive in the environment of the Abbey Road Institute, being able to work with their music production students, and to hear their music recorded in the iconic Angel Studios.’

This six year-long collaboration has made it possible for our students to solidify their learning under high pressure, ‘real-world’ conditions, where they have witnessed first-hand the challenges of chamber and orchestral recording, editing and mixing.’

The Royal College of Music offers a globally renowned two-year Masters programme in Composition for Screen, and students go on to a wide variety of careers, composing for film, TV and video games amongst other creative endeavours. The relationship with Abbey Road Institute further enhances our connections to organisations who share our commitment to developing students for the professional world, with experience of the music industry.
Composition for Screen students are perfectly placed at the Royal College of Music to have their music performed by fellow RCM students, as well as visiting and resident professional ensembles. The course also offers networking events and workshops with film, television, and new media professionals, as well as collaborations and joint tutorials with students from London-based film schools.
Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Cure, Fela Kuti, Kate Bush, Sam Smith, Bjork and Jacob Collier are just a few of the artists to have recorded at the Abbey Road Institute’s iconic London studio since it opened in the 1980s.
