In January 2025, the Royal College of Music embarked on a journey across Singapore, Hong Kong and Sydney. This visit – James Williams’ first as Director of the RCM – was a celebration of global collaboration, talent development and recruitment, and musical innovation.
Singapore: Fostering partnerships and community
Singapore set the stage for a dynamic start, with key engagements with partners at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) and the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music. These meetings reinforced the Royal College of Music’s commitment to nurturing young musicians and strengthening educational partnerships in the region.
The highlight of the visit was an elegant evening at the Shangri-La Hotel, where alumni, supporters and industry figures gathered for meaningful discussions about the RCM’s future. Guests were treated to an exquisite performance by RCM musicians Ning Hui See (piano) and Siping Guo (bassoon), showcasing the world-class artistry cultivated at the College. We are very grateful to RCM Scholarship supporters Deepak Sharma and Dr Susan Lim for their generous support in hosting this event.

Hong Kong: Reconnecting with alumni and industry leaders
Hong Kong offered a unique opportunity to engage with alumni and gain insights into the evolving musical landscape. Alumni shared reflections on their careers and discussed how the RCM can continue to support its global network.
A reception at the prestigious Hong Kong Club brought together alumni and industry leaders for an evening of music and conversation. Clarinettist Peggy Lai and flautist Marco Leung delivered a spellbinding performance, underscoring the lasting impact of an RCM education.

Sydney: Honouring excellence and expanding opportunity
In Sydney, the RCM’s visit reached new heights with a distinguished event at Government House, graciously hosted by Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AC KC, Governor of New South Wales. This special evening marked the launch of the Australian Commonwealth Scholarship, established by Peter Freedman AM, Chairman and Founder of RØDE. This transformative funding will enable exceptional young Australian musicians to study at the RCM, ensuring access to world-class training.
The event was further elevated by the presence of Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, whose foundation has been instrumental in guiding young artists to international success. The evening’s highlight was an unforgettable performance by soprano and inaugural Australian Commonwealth Scholar, Ariana Ricci (main image, with Peter Freedman and Dame Kiri Te Kanawa), demonstrating the profound impact of opportunity and artistic excellence. This new scholarship builds on the work of pivotal support for Australian students, such as the Melba Opera Trust whose Alastair Jackson International Opera Award continues to support scholars undertaking their Artist Diploma studies at the RCM.

Future Music Fund: Talent, access, innovation
Throughout the tour, the RCM championed the Future Music Fund, an initiative dedicated to supporting emerging talent, broadening access, and fostering musical innovation. By breaking down financial barriers and promoting cutting-edge research and performance opportunities, the programme ensures that the RCM remains at the forefront of music education.

The Royal College of Music extends heartfelt thanks to its supporters, partners and alumni who made this remarkable journey across Singapore, Hong Kong and Sydney a reality.
