Music by RCM Junior Department composers performed by London Sinfonietta

Music composed by Royal College of Music Junior Department students will be performed by the London Sinfonietta this Sunday, 25 October, in an online event called Reassemble Online.

The event marks the culmination of the RCM Junior Department’s first composition project with the orchestra, which will run annually from 2021. The project offers RCMJD students the opportunity to create new works under the expert guidance of members of the London Sinfonietta.

Fourteen works will receive their world premiere on Sunday at 2pm. RCMJD students Toril Azzalini-Manachler and Imaan Kashim will also be interviewed by BBC Radio 3 presenter Jumoké Fasholaas part of the event. The programme is as follows:

Miranda Francis, Head of Junior Programmes, comments: ‘I am thrilled that the London Sinfonietta have chosen to perform works by talented young composers from the Royal College of Music Junior Department. Our composers have gained so much from working with these exceptional performers who specialise in the performance of new music.　Their workshop with our composers was truly inspiring.　This project has broadened our students' musical horizons and inspired them to create some challenging new music.’

The RCMJD offers student composers many valuable experiences through partnerships with the RCM and external venues and orchestras. There are opportunities to hear works performed by RCM Postgraduate Fellows and ensembles such as Juice and Onyx Brass, who have taken part in workshops and collaborative projects. Visits from eminent contemporary composers, such as RCMJD alumnus Mark-Anthony Turnage, form part of the programme. RCMJD composition students regularly win the BBC Proms Inspire competition and go on to study composition at leading universities and conservatoires.
