Royal College of Music announces new scholarship and bursary with Huawei Technologies UK

Thursday 16 December 2021

The Royal College of Music is delighted to announce a new scholarship and bursary funded by Huawei Technologies UK. Four RCM students have been awarded the inaugural Huawei Scholarship and a further three will benefit from the Huawei Bursary to support their studies for the 2021/22 academic year.

The RCM scholarship and bursary, supported by Huawei UK, will help the chosen students access a world class performing arts education at the UK’s top conservatoire. The new Huawei Scholarship and Bursary were launched at the company’s Winter Harmonies: a celebration of music event on Tuesday 14 December. The concert featured performances from RCM students in the College’s Amaryllis Fleming Concert Hall and was attended by Victor Zhang, Vice-President of Huawei who welcomed the first recipients of the awards.

Professor Colin Lawson CBE, Director of the RCM, said: 'We are committed to attracting and nurturing exceptional musicians from across the globe by removing financial concerns through our scholarship and bursary programme. While the RCM is adapting innovatively and efficiently to the current climate, our capacity to provide the widest access to musical excellence is dependent on the philanthropic support of generous donors. Huawei’s vital support enables us to ensure that no talented and dedicated young musician is left behind through want of funds.’

Victor Zhang, Huawei Vice President, said: 'I’m delighted to be able to announce our support for the Royal College of Music in London and Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester. Music, like technology, is about inspiration, creativity and passion. It is more vital than even that young people are able to experience this and reach their potential. The pandemic has been especially challenging for children across the UK, and doubly so far those who have been left isolated and disconnected by a move to remote learning. Businesses like Huawei must embrace the opportunity to inspire talent, and we are fully committed to continuing to invest in young people all across the UK.'

Scholars play a full and active role in college life and more than 60% of our students receive some financial support during their studies. Scholarships, awards and bursaries are possible thanks to the generosity of individuals, legators, companies and charitable trusts. More information can be found at www.rcm.ac.uk/support.
