Jane Roper studied music at King's College London, Heidelberg, Cambridge and Leipzig, completing her PhD at King's College London and Leipzig University in 2004 with a thesis on music in sixteenth-century Leipzig. She later studied Hungarian Language and Culture at the University of Pécs, Hungary. Since then her work has focussed on Hungarian music, including studies of the piano works of Gyula Káldy, the music of Carl Goldmark and Jeno Hubay, and the life and works of György Ligeti. In 2007 she translated the correspondence between Ligeti and Mátyás Seiber 1956-60 preserved in the British Library. In 2014 she gave a paper on Ligeti's Violin Concerto at the SoundScape Ligeti conference, Maccagno following research of Ligeti's papers at the Paul Sacher Stiftung in Basel. She has published several articles on works by Goldmark and most recently a preface to the score of Jeno Hubay's opera The Luthier of Cremona.

Jane also has an interest in British music education and has been involved in various activities relating to music making in schools, particularly with Dr Douglas Coombes MBE. Since 2014 she has been working on a large research project investigating the archive of the Schools' Music Association of Great Britain and will shortly publish a book on the work of the Association. She currently teaches at the Royal College of Music, specialising in nineteenth- and twentieth-century music history and has supervised doctoral candidates working on Hungarian subjects. Jane is also a violinist and performs regularly with the New English Concert Orchestra.
