Juliet Hughes-Rees

Bmus (Hons) (Royal College of Music), PGDipRCM

Headshot for Juliet Hughes-Rees

Juliet Hughes-Rees started playing the violin at the age of seven. After four years she was awarded a scholarship to study at the Purcell School. In 1991, she became a pupil of the internationally renowned teacher Itzhak Rashkovsky and won a place to continue her studies with him at the Royal College of Music. Whilst there, she was awarded several prizes, most notably the Woltmann Prize (for her outstanding contribution to the orchestral programme at the College), the Fred Brough Orchestral Leadership Prize and the Doris Gould Memorial Award. A Senior Exhibition enabled her to continue her studies as a postgraduate, during which time she performed many recitals and led all the college orchestras. Juliet is principal 2nd violin of the London Orchestra de Camera and performs with many other freelance chamber orchestras but her teaching is her primary commitment. During her teaching career, Juliet has taught at Westminster School, Westminster Abbey Choir School and been Head of Strings at the Latymer School. She currently teaches at St Paul’s Girls
School and privately as well as at the Royal College of Music Junior Department. Her orchestral coaching work has included the Hertfordshire and Derbyshire County Youth Orchestras and The National Children’s Orchestra. Many of her private students have been awarded places at the RCM junior department and others have gone on to Senior RCM as well as scholarships to other
Conservatoires in England and abroad. Her students are also members of the National Children’s Orchestra, the National Youth Orchestra and Pro Corda. She has recently been invited to adjudicate at the Mill Hill festival.
