Leandro Silvera

Leandro Silvera was born in Argentina and won a British Council scholarship to study cello with Eduardo Vassallo at the Royal Northern College of Music. He participated in masterclasses with Ralph Kirshbaum at IMS Prussia Cove and worked as an assistant to Steven Doane at Bowdoin International Summer Music Festival (USA). He graduated in 1999 with a BMus (Honours) Degree and a Diploma in Professional Performance, the College’s highest performing award.

Leandro has worked as a cellist with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, the Hallé Orchestra, the Academy of St Martin in the Fields and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. He developed a passionate interest for teaching soon after graduating; between 2000-05 Leandro taught cello and coached young chamber ensembles at Chetham’s School of Music. Since then he has given cello masterclasses for the European String Teachers' Association, the Violoncello Society of London and the Oxford Cello School. He also completed his postgraduate studies with Hannah Roberts at the RNCM and was awarded a postgraduate Diploma in Performance in 2003.

Leandro was appointed Head of Strings at King’s College School, Wimbledon in 2005 and Cello Tutor at the RCM Junior Department the following year (where he was Head of Chamber Music between 2014 and 2018). He was also appointed as Visiting Tutor in Chamber Music Tutor at the Royal Academy of Music, and since 2018 Head of Strings and Chamber Music at Eton College. He is also the conductor of the National Schools Symphony Orchestra and runs a summer cello course with Hannah Roberts for Conservatoire students.
